Hernia Surgery
A hernia occurs when the contents of a body cavity bulge out of the area where they are normally contained. These contents, usually portions of intestine or abdominal fatty tissue, are enclosed in the thin membrane that naturally lines the inside of the cavity.
The most common types of hernia are:
- Inguinal – the most common kind and occuring most often in men
- Femoral – less common than incisional and occur mostly in women
- Incisional – a hernia that occurs as a complication of abdominal surgery
- Umbilical – a hernia that occurs most commonly in children
